ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVISTS
Paul Watson is an environmental activist. He is a man who believes that he must do something, not
just talk about doing something. Paul believes in protecting endangered animals, and he protects them in
controversial ways. Some people think that Watson is a hero and admire him very much. Other people think
that he is a criminal.
On July 16th, 1979, Paul Watson and his crew were on his ship, which is called the Sea Shepherd.
Watson and the people who work on the Sea Shepherd were hunting on the Atlantic Ocean near Portugal.
However, they had a strange prey; instead of hunting for animals, their prey was a ship, the Sierra. The Sea
Shepherd found the Sierra, ran into it and sank it. As a result, the Sierra never returned to the sea. The Sea
Shepherd, on the other hand, returned to its home in Canada. Paul Watson and his workers thought that they
had been successful.
The Sierra had been a whaling ship, which had operated illegally. The captain and the crew of the
Sierra did not obey any of the international laws that restrict whaling. Instead, they killed as many whales as
they could, quickly cut off the meat, and froze it. Later, they sold the whale meat in countries where it is
eaten.
Paul Watson tried to persuade the international whaling commission to stop the Sierra. However, the
commission did very little, and Paul became impatient. He decided to stop the Sierra and other whaling ships
in any way that he could. He offered to pay $25,000 to anyone who sank any illegal whaling ship, and he
sank the Sierra. He acted because he believes that the whales must be protected. Still, he acted without the
approval of the government; therefore, his actions were controversial.
Paul Watson is not the only environmental activist. Other men and women are also fighting to protect
the Earth. Like Watson, they do not always have the approval of their governments, and like Watson, they
have become impatient. Yet, because of their concern for the environment, they will act to protect it.

Google Books: Cataloging the World's Library
    The digital age has brought us several conveniences which seemed unimaginable just a few decades ago.
In particular, it has changed the way in which we consume and store information. Before the Internet, people
would need large rooms with bookshelves if they wanted to maintain a large book collection. However,
thanks to e-books and services like Google Books, readers have access to millions of books with a few clicks
of their mice.
   Google Books is a service provided by Google that catalogs books by scanning them and making them
searchable online. The project kicked off in 2004 with the ambitious goal of creating the largest body of
human knowledge ever and making it available online. To date, Google Books has scanned over 30 million
books into its catalog. By the end of the decade, its goal is to cover every book that is currently available.
  Using Google Books is quite convenient, as it is integrated into Google's search engine. When searching
for a book that Google Books has in its catalog, users can access some contents of the books depending on
its copyright status. If a work is considered to be in the public domain, as many old books are, they can read
the entire thing. However, if a book is still under copyright, the searcher will often be able to preview a few
pages. In some cases, when a author has not given permission to display their work , only a few random lines
of text  from the book will be displayed.
     Although most book lovers and researchers are thrilled that Google has scanned so many books, several
publishers are upset by the company's actions. They believe that Google  Books is hurting their business. In
2005, a group of publishers joined together to sue Google claiming massive copyright violations. In
response, Google claimed that its procedures were in line with the concept of fair use, which specifies that it
is legal to display parts of copyrighted works if it is for educational purposes.
Furthermore, Google compared its profect to a modern –day online equivalent to libraries' card catalog
system. In November 2013, the case went to trial and a judge ruled in favour of Google. Although the
publishers have announced that they will appeal the verdict, the decision is a good indicator that Google is
inching closer to becoming the main caretaker of the world's library of books.

Graphic novels, as the name suggests, are books written and illustrated in the style of a comic book. Adults
may feel that graphic novels do not help children become good readers. They believe that this type of

Sylvia Earle is an underwater explorer and marine biologist who was born in the USA in 1935. She
became interested in the world's oceans from an early age. As a child, she liked to stand on the beach for
hours and look at the sea, wondering what it must be like under the surface.
When she was 16, she finally got a chance to make her first dive, which motivated her to become an
underwater explorer. Since then, she has spent more than 6,500 hours under water, and has led more than

seventy expeditions worldwide. She has also made the deepest dive ever, reaching a record-breaking depth
of 381 metres.
In 1970, she became famous around the world when she became the captain of the first all-female team
to live under water. The team spent two weeks in an underwater 'house'. The research they carried out
showed the damage that pollution was causing to marine life, and especially to coral reefs. Her team also
studied the problem of overfishing. Fishing methods meant that people were catching too many fish. Earle
warned, and many species were in danger of becoming extinct.
Since then she has written several books and magazine articles about ways of reducing the damage that
is being done to the world's oceans. One way, she believes, is to rely on fish farms for seafood, and reduce
the amount of fishing that is done out at sea. Although she no longer eats seafood herself, she realises the
importance it plays in our diets. However, people need to reduce the impact they are having on the ocean's
supplies.
