Long ago prehistoric man began to domesticate a number of wild plants and animals for his own
use. This not only provided a more abundant food source but also allowed more people to live on a
smaller plot of ground. We tend to forget that all of our present-day pets, livestock, and food plants were
taken from the wild and developed into the forms we know today.
As centuries passed and human cultures evolved and blossomed, humans began to organise
their knowledge of nature into the broad field of natural history. One aspect of early natural history
concerned the use of plants for drugs and medicine. The early herbalists sometimes overworked their
imaginations in this respect. For example, it was widely believed that a plant or part of a plant that
resembles an internal organ would cure ailments of that organ. Thus, an extract made from a
heartshaped leaf might be prescribed for a person suffering from heart problems.
Nevertheless, the overall contributions of these early observers provided the rudiments of our
present knowledge of drugs and their uses.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate
the correct answer to each of the following questions.
Reading to oneself is a modern activity which was almost unknown to the scholars of the classical
and medieval worlds, while during the 15th century the term “reading” undoubtedly meant reading
aloud. Only during the 19th century did silent reading become commonplace. One should be wary,
however, of assuming that silent reading came about simply because reading aloud is a distraction to
others. Examination of factors related to historical development of silent reading reveals that it became
the usual mode of reading for most adult reading task mainly because the tasks themselves changed in
character.
The last century saw a steady increase in literacy, and thus in the number of readers. As readers
increased so the number of potential listeners declined, and thus there was some deduction in the need
to read aloud. As reading for the benefit of listeners grew less common, so came the flourishing of
reading as a private activity in such public places as libraries, railway carriages and offices, where,
reading aloud would cause distraction to other readers. Towards the end of the century there was still
considerable argument over whether book should be used for information or treated respectfully and
over whether the reading of material such as newspaper was in some way mentally weakening. Indeed
this argument remains with us till in education. However, whatever it virtues, the old shared literacy
culture had gone and was replaced by the printed mass media on the one hand and by books and
periodicals for a specialized readership on the other. By the end of the century, students were
recommended to adopt attitudes to books and to use skills in reading them which were in appropriate, if
not impossible, for the oral reader. The social, cultural, and technological changes in the century had
greatly altered what the term “reading” implied.
