In 1620, about 150 European people, usually called Pilgrims today, moved to North America.
Arriving at the beginning of a very hard winter, they could not find enough food to eat, so many of them
died. However, Native Americans helped them to save food for the next winter. Therefore, they held a big
celebration - "Thanksgiving" - to thank the Native Americans and worship God. Today Thanksgiving is
nationally celebrated in the US on the fourth Thursday in November to remember these early days.
The most important part of the celebration is a traditional dinner. The meal includes turkey filled with
stuffing, sweet potatoes, and cranberries. Many families have their own special way of cooking.
