Heart attacks, also called myocardial infarctions, occur when blood flow into the heart is
partially or completely blocked. According to the National Centre for Health Statistics, 0.3 per
cent of adults in the U.S. ages 18 to 44 had a heart attack in 2019 compared to 0.5 per cent in
2023. That's a 66 per cent increase over four years. (7) .
A study of more than 2,000 young adults admitted for heart attack between 2000 and
2016 in two U.S. hospitals found that 1 in 5 were 40 years old or younger - and that the
proportion of this group has been increasing by 2 per cent each year for the last decade. The
study, published in 2019 in the American Journal of Medicine, also found that people ages 40
or younger who have had a heart attack (8) .
The problem isn't uniquely American. Research shows that adults in Pakistan and India,
for example, are also experiencing heart attacks at younger ages. And though heart attacks
typically strike men more often than women, recent studies have suggested that (9) - and that
their outcomes are worse.
The majority of research shows that more people, particularly those of diverse racial and
ethnic backgrounds, are developing risk factors for heart disease at younger ages - and that
most of the young, (10) almost always have at least one underlying condition. (11)

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer
to each of the questions from 12 to 19.
In Japan, trees are more than natural resources; they are symbols of cultural heritage and
continuity. When new infrastructure projects require space, the response is not to cut down
trees but to preserve them whenever possible. Engineers often choose to uproot and relocate
mature trees rather than destroy them, reflecting a deep respect for both tradition and the
natural environment. This approach shows how modern development and cultural values can
coexist without sacrificing ecological integrity.
The process of moving a tree is far from simple. Specialists carefully study the tree's age,
root system, and soil conditions before attempting relocation. Large machinery and expert
techniques are used to lift the tree intact, ensuring minimal damage during transfer. Once
replanted, the trees require close supervision to adjust to their new environment. Though
expensive and time-consuming, this practice reflects Japan's belief that living trees deserve
careful treatment, even when urban growth places them at risk.
The benefits of relocation extend beyond symbolic respect. Preserving mature trees
maintains biodiversity, provides shade, and improves air quality in new urban areas. A tree
that has grown for decades continues to support insects, birds, and other wildlife even after
being moved. For local residents, the presence of these familiar trees creates a sense of
continuity, softening the disruption often caused by large-scale construction projects. This
connection reinforces the idea that progress does not have to erase the past.
Japan's commitment to protecting trees offers a model for sustainable development in
crowded cities. Relocation requires cooperation between engineers, environmental experts,
and local communities, demonstrating that cultural values can shape practical solutions. While

not every country may adopt the same approach, Japan illustrates that development can
proceed with respect, patience, and imagination. By treating trees as living companions rather
than obstacles, cities can grow while still honouring the natural world.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer
to each of the questions from 26 to 35.
The story of wet wipes is, in many ways, the story of modern consumption - an artefact
of a civilisation enamoured with speed, convenience, and surface perfection. Marketed as
small tokens of cleanliness, they slip easily into our daily routines, performing their quiet work
and disappearing from sight. [I] Yet their vanishing act is an illusion; in truth, each wipe
lingers, a stubborn remnant in the material archive of our habits.
They embody a paradox. Designed for moments of transient use, they endure far beyond
the lives they touch, persisting in environments they were never meant to inhabit. Bound in
synthetic fibres that outlast generations, wet wipes resist the very processes that return matter
to nature's cycle. They travel through hidden channels - sewers, rivers, ocean currents forming unseen constellations of waste. What was intended to cleanse becomes, ironically, an
agent of contamination, its quiet journey culminating in a diffuse, almost invisible presence in
soil, water, and living tissue.
To speak of wet wipes is to speak of disconnection: between intention and outcome,
between what we consume and where it ends up. Their proliferation is not merely a logistical
challenge for waste systems. [II] Each discarded wipe becomes a quiet testimony to habits that
outpace responsibility. What seems trivial in isolation gathers weight when multiplied across
millions of daily choices. Each packet, torn open without a second thought, affirms an
unspoken contract that convenience is worth the unseen cost - a cost measured not in currency
but in ecological time.
[III] The environmental catastrophe they represent is thus not an isolated misstep but a
symptom of a deeper malaise: a refusal to reckon with the afterlife of objects. Solutions, while
technical in appearance - biodegradable alternatives, clearer labelling, stricter regulation must also contend with this cultural substrate. For as long as disposability remains an
unexamined virtue, wet wipes will persist as more than a product. They will remain an
emblem: soft to the touch, hard on the Earth, and uncomfortably close to the truth of how we
live. [IV]

Question 32. Which of the following best paraphrases the underlined sentence in paragraph

B. Not until people stopped esteeming throwaway culture would wet wipes cease to be
regarded as more than simple goods.
C. Wet wipes will remain more than mere products if society continues to prize disposability
without reflection.
D. Because the habit of discarding is treated as acceptable without question, wet wipes
continue to be regarded as beyond mere objects.

A. [II]
B. [IV]

time.
C. Despite efforts to get rid of wet wipes, they still remain a sought-after commodity thanks
to their convenience.
D. Without systemic changes in cultural values, the environmental harm caused by wet wipes
will persist.
Question 35. Which of the following best summarises the passage?
A. Wet wipes' convenience hides their paradox; they are designed for transient use but persist,
contaminating the environment and reflecting a culture that avoids responsibility for its waste.
B. The use of wet wipes shows a modern culture that prioritises convenience, leading to an
illusion that they disappear, even though they become pollutants that harm marine species.
C. Wet wipes are an emblem of modern convenience, and their disposal has become a
logistical challenge for waste systems and a testimony to consumer habits.
D. To combat the environmental harm caused by wet wipes, societies must implement
technical solutions like stricter regulations and also examine their cultural attitudes toward
disposability.
