1.There are about 3.000 living languages in the world today, but only about six of them are major languages of the world. Two – thirds of the world’s population speak those languages. More than 350 million people speak English as their first language. Nobody knows exactly how many people speak it as a forein language. Chinese is the only language with more speakers than English. This is because of the huge population of Chinese. It is true that English is the most widespread language on the Earth. It is the language of business, technology, sport and aviation.

2.English is an international language. One thousand million people speak English in the world. It is the first language of 400 million people. It is the second language or the first forein language of about 600 million people. Four fifths of the world’s computers use programs in English. Three quarters of all international correspondendce is in English. Does English have the most speakers? No, it doesn’t surprisingly. Twice as many people speak Chinese as their first language.

3. I work in a factory which makes plastic pipes. I don’t like the job very much because I do the same things every day. I want to find a new job but my friend Terry tell me that I should stay. He is looking for a job but he can’t find one, which is strange because they are building a lot of new factories in our town. Of course, Terry doesn’t dress very well and he usually arrives late everywhere. He is training to be an accountant and he goes to college every day, but his parents don’t send him any money. That’s why he usually comes round to my house to eat. But luckily he’s a good cook, so at the moment while I am writing this, he is cooking the dinner.

4.Jeans are the most popular kind of clothes in the world. They are popular almost everywhere – in Japan, France, Indonesia, Canada and Brazil. Rich and poor people wear them too.
In 1850, when Levi Strauss arrived in California, he saw that workers needed strong clothes, so he began to make them. These pants were very strong and did not wear out easily. The pants became very popular immediately.
The word “ jeans” comes from the word “ Genoa”. Mr Strauss made the first jeans in the United States, but the idea and the kind of cloth came from Europe. The names came from France and Italy.
Why are jeans popular? In the United States, they are the only kind of traditional clothes. In the other countries, young people wear them because they want to look modern. Jeans are sign of youth and independence. Everybody wears jeans because everybody wants to be modern, young and independent.

5.Floods are the most common and widespread of all natural disasters. Most communities can experience some kind of flooding after pouring rains, heavy thunderstorms or winter snow thaws. Floods can be slow or fast rising but generally develop over a period of days. Dam failures are potentially the worst flood events. When a dam fails, a gigantic quantity of water is suddenly let loose downstream, destroying anything in its path.
Floodwaters can be extremely dangerous. The force of six inches of swiftly moving water can knock people off their feet. The best protection during a flood is to leave the area and go to shelter on higher ground.
