Community health initiatives aim to enhance the well-being of populations by promoting healthconscious choices and providing resources to prevent disease. Health education programs are designed
to encourage people to adopt habits that can lower their chances of developing serious conditions and
boost overall health. As defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), health
education is "the combination of learning experiences designed to help individuals and communities
improve their health by increasing their knowledge or influencing their attitudes.
On the other hand, preventive healthcare focuses on actions aimed at minimizing the occurrence
and impact of diseases. Unlike health promotion, which addresses a broader range of issues, preventive
care is often tailored to specific health risks or diseases, targeting high-risk groups to reduce
complications.
Wellness connects closely to both health education and disease prevention. It encompasses the
mindset and intentional choices that individuals make to lead healthier lifestyles. Wellness is not only a
state of physical health but also involves mental and emotional resilience and well-being.
Community health programs often address environmental factors and lifestyle choices that can
impact personal health risks. These factors include physical surroundings, social interactions, economic
stability, and access to healthcare, all of which have a huge impact on health. Modifiable health risks,
such as a sedentary lifestyle, smoking, and dietary choices, can also significantly affect disease
prevention efforts by influencing the likelihood of developing chronic illnesses.

correct answer to each of the questions.
If you're new to running, or new to marathons, you might be worried about or even fearful of the
distance. And these feelings are completely understandable, given the fact that more than 42 kilometres
is a very long way. However, more and more people are taking on this challenge every year, and for
very good reasons.
Obviously, running such a long distance requires a lot of training, and the more you train, the more
your endurance will be enhanced. And of course, as you become more physically active, your heart
and muscles will be stronger, your blood circulation will improve, and you will most likely get in shape
in no time. Additionally, there are also mental and social benefits such as feeling less stressed and more
energized as well as having the chance to meet and establish meaningful relationships with other
people.
4
If you think about it, running a marathon is also a chance for personal development. Everyone has
at least one fear or insecurity, and for many people, completing a marathon race can seem like an
extremely daunting or even impossible task. Of course, it's true that this is a big challenge that requires
commitment and perseverance. That being said, every time you step outside out of your comfort
zone and accomplish something new, you will grow stronger and become more confident.
Sometimes, you can actually help many others when you run a marathon. Many runners now
combine their marathon goal with the goal of helping others by participating in races that raise money
for charity. Besides, running in such marathon races will most likely give you all the motivation you
need to get through the exhausting 42-kilometer run. After all, it's quite difficult to quit when you
know that you are giving help to people in need.

CALORIES
A calorie, which is usually associated with food items, is a unit of energy or heat. Nearly every kind of
food and drink product contains some calories, and some may have more calories than others. Calories
are important as they contain energy for a human to survive, including breathing, moving and pumping
blood. Humans need to eat in order to get energy from the calories in their daily food so they eat all
types of foods with a wide variety of ingredients, vitamins, nutrients and other substances that are
9
helpful for the body.
Recently, people have paid more attention to the number of calories which is measured by how much
potential energy the food contains. For example, a gram of carbohydrates or a gram of protein has 4
calories while a gram of fat has 9 calories. Therefore, a person can determine the amount of energy
based on finding the number of carbohydrates, fats and proteins that the food product contains.
Each person also has a different number of calories needed although approximately 2000 calories are
suggested as the average number for most adults per day. The numbers of calories that people need
each day differ in their height, muscles, gender, age and activity level. If a person takes in more calories
than needed, that person will often become overweight. In contrast, if a person does not get enough
calories needed for his body, that one will usually lose weight. Hence, counting calories is a good way
to help people reach and maintain their weight and fitness goals, as it involves tracking how much
energy is going into the body a day.

Question 31. How can people count calories of what they eat?
A. by looking for the suitable kind of food
B. by finding out how to cook the food
C. by measuring the food weight
D. by finding the ingredients of the food
Question 32. Which of the following factors affects the number of calories people need?
A. how old they are

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions
How long will a baby born today live? 100 years? 120 years? Scientists are studying genes that
could mean long life for us all.
There are already many, many people who have passed the landmark age of 100. In fact, there
are now so many healthy, elderly people that there's a name for them: the wellderly. These are people
over the age of eighty who have no major illnesses, such as high blood pressure, heart disease or
diabetes.
There are many scientific studies of communities where healthy old age is typical. These
include places like Calabria in southern Italy and the island of Okinawa in Japan. In Calabria, the small
village of Molochio has about 2,000 inhabitants. And of these, there are at least eight people over a
hundred years old. When researchers ask people like this the secret of their long life, the answer is
almost always about food and is almost always the same: 'I eat a lot of fruit and vegetables.' 'I eat a
little bit of everything.' 'I neither smoke nor drink.'
In the past, scientists looked at things such as diet and lifestyle for an explanation of long life,
these days they are also looking at genetics. Researcher Eric Topol says that there must be genes that
10
explain why people are protected from the effects of aging process. The new research into long life
did scrutinize groups of people who have a genetic connection. One interesting group lives in Ecuador.
In one area of the country there are a number of people with the same genetic condition. It's called
Laron syndrome. These people don't grow very tall – just over one metre. But Laron syndrome also
give them protection against cancer and diabetes. As a result, they live longer than other people in their
families. Meanwhile, on the Hawaiian island of Oahu, there's another group of long-lived men,
Japanese-Americans. They have a similar gene to the Laron syndrome group.
Back in Calabria, researchers constructed the family trees of the 100-year-old people. They
looked at family information from the 19th century to today. It is concluded that there are genetic
factors that give health benefits to the men. This is a surprising result because generally in Europe,
women live longer than men. So what really makes people live longer? It seems likely that it is an
interaction of genes, the environment and probably a third factor – luck.
Question 34. Which of the following is NOT true about the Laron syndrome?
A. This syndro

THE SWEET DANGER OF SUGAR
Occurring naturally in all foods (24) ______ contain carbohydrates like fruits, vegetables, grains and
dairy, sugar can be one of the greatest threats to heart diseases if being eaten too much. Dr Lee, a
professor of (25) ______ at Harvard School of Public Health, found that there was a close link between

A. This syndro
