Don’t just listen for words – listen for sounds – train yourself to listen for: Consonant clusters – ch, st, sh, th; dipthongs – oo, ai, ee; prefixes – im, pre, dis; suffixes – ing, ed, tion, ment. Write SOMETHING down! You may be able to get the meaning/ answer in context.
Don’t be distracted by VISUALS – focus on what you hear. For this reason, it is a good idea to close your eyes on the second listening ( in class )
Listen for KEY words – which are most often spoken with STRESS ( louder and longer ). KEY WORDS can be Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives, Question words, and Negatives
Remember: words not stressed are usually not important – articles, prepositions, auxiliary verbs, and modals, and therefore are spoken quietly and quickly
Highlight/ Underline key words in the questions when doing tests, comprehension questions, and self – study
VERY IMPORTANT – Exactly the same key words found in the listening and on the question / answer sheet are rarely , if ever, the correct answer
Synonyms – VERY, VERY IMPORTANT! They are almost ALWAYS the correct answers ( 90 % of the time ).Learn them well by collecting VOCAB - Synonyms, Idioms, Collocations, and any new vocabulary in a VOCAB DIARY! Eg – couch = sofa; especially = particularly, or sinister = evil
If a man and a woman are having a conversation, and the question asks about the man, listen to the man, and if the question concerns the woman, then listen to the woman carefully. Of course, listen to both, but the “ odds” are very high that the above rule works !
It’s just as important to find out what CAN’T possibly be the answer as what possibly CAN be the answer. Try to eliminate wrong answers to make the choice easier as you go along
Listen to all oral instructions and read all written instructions Eg “ No more than two words” , “Only one word”.
In multiple choice questions, Be patient, The first answer/ key words you hear is RARELY the correct answer, the 2nd answer you hear is SOMETIMES the answers, and the 3rd answer you hear is OFTEN the correct answer. “ Good things come to those who wait”
Do a pre – listening ( prediction ) - VERY IMPORTANT . Ask yourself – what is the word form? Noun? Verb? Adjective? Number? What are the possibilities? For many questions, the answers are OBVIOUS – before you listen one time!
Listen and read – when doing any self – study, finish by going to the Quiz script ( ). Transcript of Practice Listening Tests/ Exams, or even the lyric/ script sheets of songs or podcasts, ….
Remember that 7 out of 8 skills are almost solely improved through recognition while LISTENING – speed , volume, pronunciation, linking sounds, pausing, stress, etc…

The measure of life is not its duration, but its donation.
