The hobby of collecting consists of acquiring specific items based on a particular interest of the
collector. These collections of things are often highly organized, carefully cataloged, and attractively
displayed. Since collecting depends on the interests of the individual collector, it may deal with almost
any subject. The depth and breadth of the collection may also vary. Some collectors choose to focus on a
specific subtopic within their area of general interest: for example, 19th Century postage stamp, milk
bottle labels from Sussex, or Mongolian harnesses and tack. Others prefer to keep a more general
collection, accumulating Star Trek merchandise, or stamps from all countries of the world. Some
collections are capable of being completed, at least to the extent of owning one sample of each possible
item in the collection (e.g. a copy of every book by Agatha Christie). Collectors who specifically try to
assemble complete collections in this way are sometimes called 'completist'. Upon completing a particular
collection, they may stop collecting, expand the collection to include related items, or begin an entirely
new collection. The most popular fields in collecting have specialized commercial dealers that trade in the
items being collected, as well as related accessories. Many of these dealers started as collectors
themselves, then turned their hobby into a profession. There are some limitations on collecting, however.
Someone who has the financial means to collect stamps might not be able to collect sport cars, for

Part 1.

James: Hi, Elisa. How are you? What are you doing these days?
Elisa: Hi, James. I'm doing well, thanks. Actually, I'm quite busy because I'm studying a lot at the
moment. I want to do medicine at university. I also have English classes on Monday and
Wednesday evenings. But I enjoy the challenge, so I don't mind. How about you?
James: I'm having a great time at the moment because I've got a new hobby – metal detecting. I join a
club and we go metal detecting every weekend.
Elisa: Metal detecting? Tell me more about it?
James: Well, we use special equipment that tells use when there is metal under the ground. Coins are the
most popular things that we find. This Saturday we are going to the beach. People lose things all
the time at the beach, so I think we might find something valuable, like jewellery or phones in the
sand. Sometimes, people just find junk.
Elisa: Really? That sounds like fun!
James: Do you want to join us?
Elisa: Well, I have chores on Saturday morning. I vacuum the floor and do the laundry. What time do
you start?
James: We meet at the library at half past eight and take the bus to the beach. We usually start at around
nine o'clock.
Elisa: What if I come at ten o'clock?
James: Sure, that's fine. We usually stay at the beach until half past twelve. How are you going to get
there?
Elisa: My mum has yoga classes at a quarter to ten, so she will drive me to the beach.
James: Great! Call me when you get there. When we finish, we can have lunch in the café opposite the
beach.
Elisa: Yeah. I'll see you at the beach on Saturday.

Part 2

Woman: So, what's your usual day like? You always seem so busy.
Man: Well, I usually get up around 5:00 a.m. and work on the computer until 6:00.
Woman: Why do you get up so early?
Man: Well, I have to leave home at twenty to seven (6:40 a.m.) so I can catch a bus at 7:00 o'clock .
It takes me about twenty minutes to walk to the bus stop from my house.
Woman: And what time do you get to work?
Man: Uh, my bus takes about an hour to get there, but it stops right in front of my office.
Woman: That's nice. And what time do you get off work?
Man: Uh, around 5:00 o'clock. Then, we eat dinner around 6:30, and my wife and I read and
play with the kids until 8:00 or so.
Woman: So, when do you work on your website? You said one time that you create it at home?
Man: Well, my wife and I often watch TV or talk until 10:00 o'clock. She then often reads while I
work on my site, and I sometimes stay up until the early hours of the morning, but I try to
finish everything by one or two.
Woman: And then you get up at 5:00 a.m.?
Man: Well, yeah, but it's important to live a balanced life. I enjoy what I do, but you have to set
aside time for the family and yourself.
Woman: I agree.
Man: But I think my wife has the toughest job. She spends her whole day taking care of the family . .
. taking the kids to school, working in the garden, buying groceries, taking the kids to piano
lessons . . . [Wow!] That's a full-time job, but she enjoys what she does.
Woman: Well, it sounds like you're a busy, but lucky man.
