II. Underline the GERUNDS in the article. Be careful not to circle the present progressive
forms of verbs.
Getting an education is important to many young people in the United States. In fact, young
people must get an education. Starting school at age five, or even younger if they go to preschool, is
normal for most students. It depends on the state, but most students don't finish studying until they
are 17 or 18. Students go to elementary school, middle school (sometimes called junior high
school), and then high school.
Many high schools are offering classes that prepare students for college - for example, advanced
English, math, and science classes. These classes are called college prep classes.
However, not attending college is an option. Some students enjoy getting a job right out of school.
Taking vocational courses, such as car repair or computer skills, is an option for high school
students who are not planning to go to college.
III. Complete the statements about students' plans. Use the gerund form of the verbs in
parentheses.

John: I think working (work) after high school is important. I am considering……………..(work)
at a bank and …………….(move) to Los Angeles.
Yawen: I have two years of high school left, but I've already taken advanced math classes
………………......(plan) in advance is important, and I'm considering…….........……..(become)
an engineer.
Sebastian: I've always imagined (become) a photographer. ………………….(pay) for the classes
is expensive, but my parents have been discussing…………………(help) me.
IV. GERUND AFTER PREPOSITIONS. Complete the passage below. Use gerunds with the
words in the box.
about / try - for / learn - to / make - on / use - at / educate - in / apply - of / have

Nick: It's not that hard. I can help you.
Ivan: That would be great. I usually do everything by myself. What colleges should I apply to?
Nick: First, let's concentrate on one thing: how you'll get money for school.
Ivan: Good idea. I usually think about too many things at the same time. Then I give up.
