Read the following passage and mark the correct answer to each of the questions.
There is a natural balance to all things: life and death, good and bad, happiness and sadness, pleasure and
pain. The very idea that you should focus on positives and ignore negatives, likewise with strengths versus
weaknesses, is not only delusive; it's a recipe for disaster.
Let me tell you a couple of stories to show how dealing with reality as openly and genuinely as possible is
the path to success and happiness, while focusing only on the positives and strengths can destroy your career
and your company.
3
It's no secret that Steve Jobs was forced out of Apple in 1984 because his management style had become
toxic to the company. Much later, Jobs would come to realize that getting fired from the company he
cofounded “was the best thing that could have ever happened” to him. He called it “awful-tasting medicine”
that “the patient needed.” He also likened it to life hitting him in the head with a brick.
That forced Jobs to look in the mirror and see the truth - that he wasn't as capable or as strong a leader as
he could be. And as he addressed the issues that stood in his way, the result was the founding of NeXT and
Pixar, his eventual return to Apple, and the greatest turnaround in corporate history that built the most
valuable company on Earth.
It's easy to miss the obvious connection staring us right in the face, that it wasn't just Apple that had hit a
wall, fallen on hard times, and found itself in need of a turnaround. The same was true of Jobs. And there was
an undeniable connection between the two.
It's also easy to miss the insightfulness of Jobs' realization that none of his later achievements would have
occurred if he hadn't faced reality. That sort of introspection only comes from someone who's had some sort
of intervention and gone through gut-wrenching change as a result.
Not to compare myself with Jobs, but the truth is I've gotten a couple of those bricks to the head myself.
I've been fired more than once and lost my wife early in our marriage. But in every case I looked in the
mirror, faced what I saw, made some changes, and bounced back stronger than ever.
If I'd just tried to stay positive, focused on my strengths, and searched for the silver lining in the clouds, I
never would have figured out what was wrong and become a better person, a better husband, and a better
leader. I never would have achieved so much in my career or won my wife back.
While life is full of ups and downs, one thing is certain: If you attempt to filter your consciousness and
disallow negative thoughts or make believe the weaknesses holding you back don't exist, you'll never get past
those hurdles and get to the next stage in your personal and professional development. And neither will your
business.

Read the following passage and mark the correct answer to each of the questions.
Theresa May, the second female Britain's prime minister following Margaret Thatcher, revealed in 2013
that she had been given a diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes, a condition that requires daily insulin injections.
Asked later how she felt about the diagnosis, she said her approach to it was the same as toward everything
in her life: “Just get on and deal with it.” That kind of steeliness brought her to center stage in the aftermath
of Britain's vote to leave the European Union and the feuding that erupted in the Conservative Party over
who would succeed David Cameron.
Ms. May, 59 years old, is the country's longest-serving home secretary in half a century, with a reputation
for seriousness, hard work and above all, determination. She is one of a growing number of women in
traditionally male-dominated British politics rising to the upper position of leadership.
Born in 1956, Ms. May grew up mainly in Oxfordshire, an only child who was first drawn to the
Conservative Party at age 12. As a conscientious student, she never rebelled against her religious upbringing
and remains a regular churchgoer. Tellingly, her sports hero was Geoffrey Boycott, a solid, stubborn cricketer
who specialized in playing the long game.
Like many other Britain's prime minister including Tony Blair, Sir Robert Peel and Margaret Thatcher, she
won a place at Oxford. But while almost every other political leader got there by way of Eton College and
joined Oxford's hedonistic Bullingdon Club, she attended a state secondary school and had a more sedate
university career. After unsuccessful attempts to be elected to the House of Commons in 1992 and 1994, she
finally became an MP in 1997 general election.
[I] May is known for a love of fashion and in particular distinctive shoes. [II] However, she has been quite
critical of the media focusing on her fashion instead of her achievement as a politician. [III] May also
describes cooking and walking as primary hobbies, and if someone is raising questions about why walking can
be classified as a hobby, she elaborates in a column for Balance magazine, in which she wrote of her battle
with diabetes. [IV]
45. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Theresa May's journey to becoming Britain's second female prime minister and her determination to
overcome challenges.
5
B. The history of female leadership in British politics and its impact on the Conservative Party.

47. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. British political life is conventionally controlled mainly by men.
B. The number of women in politics is increasing.
C. Conservative Party didn't have to discuss about who would be the next prime minister.
D. Theresa May's toughness was one of the reasons for the Party to choose her for the prime minister
position.
48. What does the word "it" in the first passage refer to?
A. The diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes
B. Theresa May's daily insulin injection
C. Theresa May's life
D. Margaret Thatcher's diagnosis
49. Which option best paraphrases the first sentence in the third paragraph?
A. Theresa May, like Tony Blair, Sir Robert Peel, and Margaret Thatcher, was accepted to study at Oxford
University.
B. Many British prime ministers, including Tony Blair, Sir Robert Peel, and Margaret Thatcher, studied at
Oxford, and Theresa May followed the same path.
C. Theresa May shared a similarity with Tony Blair, Sir Robert Peel, and Margaret Thatcher by attending the
University of Oxford.
D. Tony Blair, Sir Robert Peel, Margaret Thatcher, and Theresa May all achieved academic success by
attending Oxford University.
50. Which option best summarizes the last paragraph?
A. Theresa May's distinctive fashion choices, including her leopard-print shoes, have drawn media attention,
but she criticizes this focus and highlights her hobbies of cooking and walking.
B. Theresa May's love for cooking and walking as hobbies is directly related to her management of Type 1
diabetes.
C. Theresa May is widely known for her fashion sense and her public explanation of why walking is a unique
hobby.
D. Theresa May uses her column in Balance magazine to defend her hobbies and criticize media attention on
her fashion choices.

[IV]
