Part 2. Questions 91 – 100. (2 pts-0.2/each)
You are going to read a passage. Choose the answer (А, В, С or D) which you think fits best the
question or a blank space.
Let children learn to judge their own work. A child learning to talk does not learn by being
corrected all the time: if corrected too much, he will stop talking. He notices a thousand times a day the
difference between the language he uses and the language those around him use. Bit by bit, he makes
the necessary changes to make his language like other people's. In the same way, children learn all the
other things they learn to do without being taught – to talk, run, climb, whistle, ride a bicycle – compare
6|Page

their own performances with those of more skilled people, and slowly make the needed changes. But
in school we never give a child a chance to find out his mistakes for himself, let alone correct them. We
do it all for him. We act as if we thought that he would never notice a mistake unless it was pointed out
to him, or correct it unless he was made to. Soon he becomes dependent on the teacher. Let him do it
himself. Let him work out, with the help of other children if he wants it, what this word says, what the
answer is to that problem, whether this is a good way of saying or doing this or not.
If it is a matter of right answers, as it may be in mathematics or science, give him the answer book.
Let him correct his own papers. Why should we teachers waste time on such routine work? Our job
should be to help the child when he tells us that he can't find the way to get the right answer. Let's end
all this nonsense of grades, exam, marks. Let us throw them all out, and let the children learn what all
educated persons must someday learn, how to measure their own understanding, how to know what
they know or do not know.
Let them get on with this job in the way that seems most sensible to them, with our help as school
teachers if they ask for it. The idea that there is a body of knowledge to be learnt at school and used for
the rest of one's life is nonsense in a world as complicated and rapidly changing as ours. Anxious
parents and teachers say, “But suppose they fail to learn something essential, something they will need
to get on in the world?” Don't worry! If it is essential, they will go out into the world and learn it.
91. What does the author think is the best way for children to learn things?

B. by making mistakes and having them corrected
C. by listening to explanations from skilled people
D. by asking a great many questions
92. What does the author think teachers do which they should not do?

A. Teachers should closely monitor students to ensure progress.

by ________.

Part 3. Questions 101 – 110. (2 pts-0.2/each)
Read the passage below, then decide if each statement is true (T), false (F) or not given (NG)
compared with information in the passage.
Today's grandparents are joining their grandchildren on social media, but the different
generations' online habits couldn't be more different. In the UK the over-55s are joining Facebook in
increasing numbers, meaning that they will soon be the site's second biggest user group, with 3.5 million
users aged 55–64 and 2.9 million over-65s.
Sheila, aged 59, says, 'I joined to see what my grandchildren are doing, as my daughter posts
videos and photos of them. It's a much better way to see what they're doing than waiting for letters and
photos in the post. That's how we did it when I was a child, but I think I'm lucky I get to see so much
more of their lives than my grandparents did.'
Ironically, Sheila's grandchildren are less likely to use Facebook themselves. Children under 17
in the UK are leaving the site – only 2.2 million users are under 17 – but they're not going far from their
smartphones. Chloe, aged 15, even sleeps with her phone. 'It's my alarm clock so I have to,' she says. 'I
look at it before I go to sleep and as soon as I wake up.'
Unlike her grandmother's generation, Chloe's age group is spending so much time on their
phones at home that they are missing out on spending time with their friends in real life. Sheila, on the
other hand, has made contact with old friends from school she hasn't heard from in forty years. 'We use
Facebook to arrange to meet all over the country,' she says. 'It's changed my social life completely.'
Teenagers might have their parents to thank for their smartphone and social media addiction as
their parents were the early adopters of the smartphone. Peter, 38 and father of two teenagers, reports
that he used to be on his phone or laptop constantly. 'I was always connected and I felt like I was always
8|Page

working,' he says. 'How could I tell my kids to get off their phones if I was always in front of a screen
myself?' So, in the evenings and at weekends, he takes his SIM card out of his smartphone and puts it
into an old-style mobile phone that can only make calls and send text messages. 'I'm not completely cut
off from the world in case of emergencies, but the important thing is I'm setting a better example to my
kids and spending more quality time with them.'
Is it only a matter of time until the generation above and below Peter catches up with the new
trend for a less digital life?
101. In the UK, people over 55 are joining Facebook in large numbers.
________
102. Sheila joined Facebook to keep in touch with her friends.
________
103. More people under 17 use Facebook than people over 55.

108. Peter removes his SIM card on weekends to encourage his children to use their phones less.

________
110. Sheila's daughter regularly sends her letters and photos by mail.
