Read the following passage about why teens need control and mark the letter A, B, C or D to
indicate the best answer to each of the following questions from 31 to 40.
When one of our teenagers, whose name will not be mentioned, was 15, she officially. dismissed
us as her management team for the last time. She was completely fed up with our controlling and
overbearing behavior.
[I] Years ago, one of my friends, an educator I respect a lot, had warned me that this would
happen. [II] But, honestly, I just couldn't imagine it at the time. [III] I thought that I'd always get to
manage my children's lives, at least while they were living under my roof. [IV] I used to think that I
was good at managing my family and that I should be promoted . When my kids got older, not fired.
However, once kids enter adolescence, they need to take control of their own lives, and that's
when they often "fire" us as their managers. Parents who are too controlling - those who don't step
down from their manager roles - breed rebellion. Many kids with micromanaging parents will nod
and say "yes, sir" or "yes, ma'am" to the strict rules set by their parents, but they'll often break those
rules as soon as they can. They don't do this because they are misbehaving, but because they need to
regain control over their own lives.
This cannot be emphasized enough: Healthy, self-disciplined, motivated teenagers possess a
strong sense of control over their lives. A wealth of research shows that agency is one of the most
crucial factors in both success and happiness. Believing that we can shape our own lives (through our
own efforts) predicts nearly all of the positive outcomes we desire for our children: better health and
longevity, lower drug and alcohol use, reduced stress, higher emotional well-being, greater intrinsic
motivation and self-discipline, improved academic performance, and even greater career success.
Even teens who aren't rebellious and don't lie or hide their behavior still suffer when parents
micromanage them. These kids often waste emotional energy resisting advice from their parents that
is clearly in their best interest, just to reclaim a sense of control.
Letting go of control is difficult, but it's necessary for our teens to grow into independent,
self-disciplined adults. By stepping back, we allow them the space to build confidence and take
charge of their own lives.
Question 31. Where in paragraph 2 does the following sentence best fit?
