Mark Charles: Capturing Extreme Weather
Mark Charles makes a living as a storm chaser and weather photographer. Throughout his professional life,
he has captured images of all kinds of spectacular natural events, such as tornadoes, severe thunderstorms,
and hurricanes. Many of his photographs have been featured in well-known scientific journals.
Additionally, Mark has made successful appearances on American television documentaries to talk about
intense weather, chasing storms, and climate change. He is known for being a dynamic and passionate
speaker. He has written engaging articles regarding our shifting climate, hosts a highly popular blog about
wild weather, and has published multiple books. But how did Mark's journey actually begin?
Mark spent his childhood in Wisconsin, an American state where blizzards, ice storms, floods, and tornadoes
happen frequently. At just six years old, he witnessed his first hurricane up close - a powerful memory that
stayed with him forever. A few years later, his mother gifted him a camera. Interestingly, young Mark was
initially more fascinated by recording the audio effects of nature than taking pictures. He would spend hours
capturing outdoor sounds. Although it started as a boyhood hobby, it quickly sparked a deep fascination with
severe weather. He kept diaries filled with observations and a few collected images. Through this, he figured
out how different weather elements interacted and learned to predict when a thunderstorm or an ice storm
might strike. Being a simple observer was enough to teach him a great deal about nature. As a teenager, he
regularly read about extreme weather incidents in newspapers and visited the library to study specific
scientific articles. He even joined an after-school club that took field trips to monitor weather patterns.
At university, Mark chose to study journalism instead of photography, starting his professional path as a
writer for local newspapers. He excelled at his work and never felt any regret about pursuing journalism.
However, he kept his childhood passion for storms alive. In his late twenties, he came across an
6

Đề Thi Chuyên Anh Tuyển Sinh 10 Năm 2026-2027 liên hệ Zalo O988166193 để mua ạ

advertisement for a storm-chasing tour in Tornado Alley. He decided to book the trip, bringing his camera
along. Eventually, Mark's passion for photography overtook his writing career, transforming him into the
visual artist he is today.
46. What does the author state about Mark's photographs?
A. They capture a wide variety of incredible weather events.
B. They have been featured in numerous important books.
C. They have served as the main topic for several popular documentaries.
D. They have changed significantly in style over the years.
47. What do we learn about Mark from the text?
A. He is unable to share his knowledge about severe weather online.
B. He is an effective communicator when discussing the weather.
C. He dislikes writing articles about extreme weather events.
D. He prefers to avoid appearing on television or in the media.
48. What is revealed about Mark's childhood?
A. He loved taking photos of hurricanes from a young age.
B. He developed a strong interest in severe weather.
C. He developed a deep fear of powerful storms.
D. He was injured during a major hurricane.
49. What does the author note about the beginning of Mark's career?
A. He regretted not choosing to study photography at university.
B. He was talented at writing news stories.
C. He captured brilliant photos of local community events.
D. He showed more talent for art than for regular journalism.
50. What is the author's primary purpose in writing this article?
A. To offer guidance on how to become a professional photographer.
B. To inspire readers to try photography as a hobby.
C. To outline the professional journey of a specific photographer.
D. To provide instructions on taking photos during extreme weather.
Part 2: For questions 51 – 55, read the passage and choose the best answer (A, B, C, or D) for each

The Reluctant Hero
The most charming quality of Aaron Green – among many – is his refusal to acknowledge the massive wave
7

Đề Thi Chuyên Anh Tuyển Sinh 10 Năm 2026-2027 liên hệ Zalo O988166193 để mua ạ

of stardom that is heading his way. "I can stroll down the street without being bothered, which is wonderful.
I genuinely hope that won't change, and I'm confident it won't," he states sincerely. He seems to truly
believe that his profession will not alter his everyday life. “There is nothing extraordinary about my day-today life, and there is absolutely no reason why that should alter now.” You can't help but wish him luck.
It would be wonderful if this expectation proved correct, but realistically, it won't, and deep down, he must
be aware of that. Aaron has recently been chosen to play the lead role in an upcoming fantasy blockbuster set
to premiere next year. The release of the first promotional image of him in costume last week triggered an
absolute frenzy across the internet.
Following an award nomination for his previous role, Aaron is currently experiencing the most successful
year of his career, yet he has kept his feet firmly on the ground. "It's flattering when your work is
recognized, but this is all uncharted territory for me," he remarks. "I truly love working in this field and
discovering what I can do. No one can predict the future. We can fantasize about what lies ahead, but it's
quite pointless. I am simply enjoying my current projects and hope to do a good job moving forward, but
that's pretty much it. No major drama."
Out of all the personalities featured in his previous movie - which tells the true story of several college
students who launch a highly influential blog - Aaron's character comes across as the most appealing.
However, he maintains that the narrative is far more complex than it appears on the surface. "The brilliant
thing about this movie is that every single character believes they are doing the right thing. I don't think
anyone in the cast viewed themselves as playing the bad guy. It was merely a group of individuals who held
contrasting perspectives."
It is a characteristically reflective response from the 27-year-old actor, who strikes one as a bit of an
overthinker and prefers to avoid viewing his own performances on screen. He undoubtedly dislikes being
interviewed as well, though he is so transparent and charming that a viewer would never guess it. He
admitted to feeling "a heightened sense of accountability" when portraying a living person in his last film,
despite having no direct interaction with the individual. "These are real people living their lives out there
somewhere - naturally, that deeply impacts the caution and precision you bring to the role. I kept wondering
if he would watch the movie, if he would see himself in my acting, or if he would be offended by it."
His portrayal carries an emotional fragility that can be quite intense to watch. Does he deliberately look for
those specific roles, or do filmmakers spot that trait in him? "I'm not entirely sure; I assume it's a mixture of
both. I definitely possess a strong desire to cling to a sense of innocence - to preserve a childlike perspective
on the world. I view it as a very prominent and deep theme in my own life, and from speaking to peers my
age, I believe it's a sentiment we all share."
51. In the first paragraph, the author implies that Aaron _____________.
8

Đề Thi Chuyên Anh Tuyển Sinh 10 Năm 2026-2027 liên hệ Zalo O988166193 để mua ạ

A. maintains a practical and realistic view of stardom.
B. feels self-assured about managing the pressures of being famous.
C. seems completely oblivious to the fact that he is on the verge of massive fame.
D. holds impractical expectations regarding what a famous lifestyle entails.
52. The phrase "he has kept his feet firmly on the ground" suggests that Aaron is _____________.
A. humble and unpretentious about his recent success.
B. accustomed to being showered with public admiration.
C. skeptical about his chances of taking home an award.
D. unconvinced that he genuinely deserves so much public interest.
53. What does Aaron point out regarding his previous film?
A. The boundaries between the good guys and the bad guys are distinct.
B. The core storyline is less straightforward than people might assume.
C. He understands the exact reasons why audiences favored his character.
D. Frequent arguments occurred among the cast members during filming.
54. What does Aaron reveal about portraying a real-life individual?
A. He felt let down by the fact that he never got to meet the person.
B. He was convinced that the individual would avoid watching the movie altogether.
C. He worried that the person might easily take offense at his portrayal.
D. He felt relieved that the person gave their blessing for him to take the role.
55. What point does Aaron make in the final paragraph?
A. He restricts himself to acting roles that mirror his actual identity.
B. He prefers to let the director guide how a character should behave.
C. He is far more mature than people give him credit for.
D. He experiences certain emotions that are common among his generation.
Part 3: For questions 56 – 60, read the passage below and decide which answer (A, B, C, or D) best fits
each gap. Write your answers in the corresponding numbered boxes.

Nowadays, of course, it is chewed around the world, although the fact that it continues to be regarded by
some as an unpleasant habit. Unfortunately, far too many people drop used gum into the pavement, where it
remains for some time because it is extremely difficult to remove once it has stuck to the surface. On the
other hand, those in favour of chewing gum claim it helps them relax, improve their concentration, and helps
keep their teeth clean.
