Read the following passage and mark the letter (A, B, C or D) on your answer sheet to indicate the best answer to
each of the following questions from 23 to 30.
A recent study suggests that male house cats tend to use their left front paw more
often than their right, while female cats will more often use their right front paw - at
least for some tasks.
In an experiment involving twenty-one male and twenty-one female cats, researchers
placed a piece of fish at the bottom of a narrow jar, and observed what the cats did to
get the food out of the jar. Each cat repeated the experiment a dozen times over a
period of weeks. Twenty of the male cats used their left front paw every time, while
twenty of the females used their right one. One male cat was ambidextrous, using his
left and right paws about equally.
However, these paw preferences were not observed in other experiments. For example,
when these same cats were presented with a stuffed toy, they were all equally as likely to touch it with
the left paw first as they were with the right, indicating no preference. Similarly, when a string was
dragged in front of them, both sexes attacked it first with either paw, with roughly equal frequency.
In describing the results, Dr. Jennifer Stone of the Animal Psychology Center in Boston, MA, who led
the cat study said, 'Because the jar experiment requires the most skill, they may be using their 'best'
paw. Maybe it's like humans: we can all open a door with either hand without a problem, but we find it
difficult to write equally well with both hands. But it's unclear why for cats there should be a genderbased difference for some tasks, and not for others.'

of the following questions from 31 to 40.
James Joyce's Ulysses, written between 1914 and 1921 is widely considered to be one of the most
important works of modernist literature. It has also been one of the most controversial, both for its
content and its style.
[31-A] The novel focuses on one day in the life of Leopold Bloom, a middle-aged man living in Dublin,
Ireland.
[31-B] Joyce took the adventure of the hero and applied it to a typical day in Bloom's
life, and in so doing made a heroic figure of an ordinary man of no apparent distinction. [31-C] Joyce's
ground-breaking stream-of-consciousness style also allowed the reader not only to trace the actions
of Bloom's day but also to follow his thoughts - with all its tangents, digressions, and even its Irish
vernacular. [31-D] In sum, this focus on ordinary life, the emphasis on the inner self, and the non- Trang 4/5 -

traditional style are why Ulysses has been called 'a summary of the entire Modernist movement' in
literature.
But there has always been a disparity between the praise that people shower on
Ulysses and the experience of reading it. Ulysses has been called overwritten,
grandiose, self-congratulatory, and unfathomable. The novel is approximately 265,000
words long, uses a lexicon of over 30,000 words, and is so filled with historical
references, obscure allusions, and odd puns that whole graduate school courses are
often dedicated to its reading. Even Joyce admitted, 'The demand I make of my reader
is that he should devote his whole life to reading my works.'
And yet, for all its difficulty and obscurity, it remains one of the most important novels of
the last century. In the final analysis, Ulysses forever changed people's ideas about what a novel is
and what it can do.
31. Where in the second paragraph does the following sentence best fit?

C. [31-C]
D. [31-D]

A. historical references.
B. imaginative scenarios.
C. obscure allusions.
D. odd puns.
35. Which of the following best paraphrases the third paragraph?
A. Ulysses is admired for its brilliance, its dense structure and intricate references, which greatly interest readers.
B. Due to its difficulty, Ulysses is widely praised by celebrated writers and academic courses, not least its author.
C. Ulysses is criticized for being complex, lengthy, and difficult to understand, thus requiring tremendous effort.
D. Ulysses needs extensive analysis or a dedicated study to fully comprehend the figurative meaning of its words.
36. The word ground-breaking in the second paragraph is OPPOSITE in meaning to

each of the following questions from 23 to 30.

The novel is approximately 265,000

references, obscure allusions, and odd puns that whole graduate school courses are
often dedicated to its reading. Even Joyce admitted, 'The demand I make of my reader
is that he should devote his whole life to reading my works.'
