Earth is a unique planet in our solar system. Unlike the hot, rocky planets closer to the Sun
or the cold, gas giants further out, Earth has the right conditions to support the life as we know it. Our
atmosphere, a layer of gases surrounding the planet, acts like a giant blanket, trapping heat from the Sun
and keeping the temperature within a range suitable for liquid water to exist. Water is essential for life,
and Earth has a vast amount of it in liquid form on its surface – oceans, lakes, and rivers.
Earth is also the only planet known to have plate tectonics. This process involves giants slabs of
rock, called tectonic plates, slowly moving around the planet's surface. The movement of these plates
creates mountains, volcanoes, and earthquakes, but it also plays a crucial role in recycling nutrients and
maintaining a stable climate.
Another key factor for life is Earth's magnetic field. This invisible shield protects us from harmful
radiation coming from the Sun and other stars. Without this shield, life on Earth would be constantly
bombarded by radiation, making it difficult, if not impossible, for life to exist.
Question 1 What makes Earth unique in our solar system?
A. It's the biggest planet.
B. It's made entirely of water.
C. It's the only planet with moons.
D. It has the right conditions for life.
Question 2. What is the main function of Earth's atmosphere?
A. To create wind
B. To make the sky blue
C. To trap heat from the Sun
D. To provide oxygen for breathing
Question 3. What is an important consequence of plate tectonics on Earth?
A. It creates beautiful landscapes.
B. It helps maintain a stable climate.
C. It makes the planet spin faster.
D. It allows humans to build tall buildings.
Question 4. Why is the magnetic field important?
A. It's a source of light for the planet.
B. It protects Earth from harmful radiation.
C. It attracts meteors away from Earth.
D. It helps birds navigate during migration
4. Read the following passage and choose the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each of
the questions from 1 to 5.
Over the past 600 years, English has grown from a language of few speakers to become the dominant language of
international communication. English as we know it today emerged around 1350, after having incorporated many
elements of French that were introduced following the Norman invasion of 1066. Until the 1600s, English was, for
the most part, spoken only in England and had not extended even as far as Wales, Scotland, or Ireland. However,
during the course of the next two centuries, English began to spread around the globe as a result of exploration,
trade (including slave trade), colonization, and missionary work. Thus, small enclaves of English speakers became
established and grew in various parts of the world. As these communities proliferated. English gradually became
the language of international business, banking and diplomacy.
Currently, about 80 percent of the information stored on computer systems worldwide is English. Two-thirds of
the world's science writing is in English, and English is the main language of technology, advertising, media,
international airports, and air traffic controllers. Today there are more than 700 million English users in the world,
and over half of these are normative speakers, constituting the largest number of normative users than any other
language in the world.

A. To create wind
B. To make the sky blue
C. To trap heat from the Sun
D. To provide oxygen for breathing
Question 3. What is an important consequence of plate tectonics on Earth?
A. It creates beautiful landscapes.
B. It helps maintain a stable climate.
C. It makes the planet spin faster.
D. It allows humans to build tall buildings.
Question 4. Why is the magnetic field important?
A. It's a source of light for the planet.
B. It protects Earth from harmful radiation.
C. It attracts meteors away from Earth.
D. It helps birds navigate during migration
4. Read the following passage and choose the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each of
