THE HISTORY OF INVENTIONS
There have been many creations and discoveries in the last few centuries that have changed the world. When
people think of important inventions, they usually think of the car, the lightbulb, the phone and the internet.
However, inventions don't always have to be about technological advances.
One of the first inventions in history was stone tools, used for farming and building more than two million
years ago. Before that, people used to use their hands, but it was slow and tiring. Stone tools might sound
unimportant, but they helped give the idea for many more inventions to come, such as wooden boats,
clothing and paints. Many of these were invented in Africa.
If you think that inventions were just used for work and to make life easier, you might be mistaken.
Inventions have often also been about what makes people happy and keeps them entertained. Think of
musical instruments, the radio and the cinema. People are always looking for new ways to enjoy their time,
or to make difficult times easier. It's not always about turning hard work into easy work.
It's important to understand the inventions of the past to see how much the world has changed, and to
appreciate these changes and advances. While it is hard to know what the next big invention will be, it is
exciting to try and guess.
31. The most important inventions have been about technological advances.
__________
32. One of the first inventions created was stone tools.
__________
33. Many of the earliest inventions were made in Africa.
__________
34. There are more inventions in entertainment than in other aspects of life.
__________
35. People appreciated past inventions more than modern ones.

C. Read the passage and choose the best answer to each of the following questions.
THE GREATEST INVENTORS
When we think of “the greatest inventors” in the world, we almost always think of those like Thomas Edison
or Alexander Graham Bell. They had revolutionary ideas and there is no doubt that our lives would be very
different (and very boring) without their creations. It almost seems like nobody has invented anything useful
in a long time, but this is simply not true!
Our technology today is so advanced that new inventions don't seem to have life-changing results. But this
doesn't mean that they aren't useful, or that they aren't amazing, either. It's just that they are less noticeable
Page 3 of 6
than it was in the past when new creations considerably changed our way of life. And so, we should
celebrate these incredible people and respect them as much as we respect the inventors that came before
them.
Modern-day inventor Elon Musk has transformed the world of automobiles with his creation of arguably the
first self-driving car that performs as well as regular cars.
Before he passed away in 1931, Thomas Edison held the world record for the largest number of inventions –

Yamazaki holds the record of 6074 inventions, and counting!
And then there is Mark Zuckerberg whose invention actually did change our lives, especially in terms of
social media, marketing, and even job creation. Zuckerberg was only 19 years old when he invented
Facebook. In 2007, at age 23, Zuckerberg became the world's youngest self-made billionaire.
