Harry and the baby elephant!
Harry's family all worked with animals. His parents were farmers and his uncle worked in a
zoo. After school from Monday to Friday, Harry helped his mum and dad with the cows and
sheep. It was hard work. On Saturday and Sunday mornings, he helped his uncle at the zoo. He
always gave the elephants their food because they were his favourite animals.
One Saturday, a small baby elephant had a very bad cough. Harry's uncle tried togive the baby
elephant some medicine. But because the mother elephant was afraid, she pushed his hand
away. Harry's uncle said, 'We must take the baby elephant to the zoo hospital.' At the hospital,
Harry's uncle gave him some warm milk and medicine.
That week, Harry had a holiday from school so he helped his uncle with the baby elephant
every day. After six days, the baby elephant was much better, so Harry's uncle took him home
to his mother. Harry was sad when he said goodbye. Harry's uncle understood the problem.
'When he was ill in the hospital, the baby elephant liked you because you helped him. he
doesn't need you now because he's with his mother. But he's happy, isn't he?'
'You're right', said Harry, 'so I'll be happy, too.'

David lives with his parents i a big city, but his grand parents and cousin, William, live far
away on an island. Last summer, David flew to see them for the first time.
David was hot and tired when he got off the plane. The island was very different from David's
city. He didn't like it. 'Oh no!' he thought. 'I've got to stay here for a month!' His
grandparents' house was very old and small. When David went to his bedroom, he found a
green lizard on his bed! At night, it was too hot to sleep and the frogs outside were very noisy.

swam and played in the sea for a long time. Then David was thirsty, so William climbed a tree

Betty's brother, Paul, was on holiday and wrote her a postcard from every place that he visited.
He sent the first postcard from the Pyramids. After, ' that, Paul went on a beautiful boat on a big
river, and he sent a postcard of that, too. Next to the boat, Paul wrote, 'I went on this!' Paul's
last postcard showed a man on a camel. 'I'd like to ride a camel, too', thought Betty.
At the weekwend, Betty went to the zoo with her cousin, Emma. 'Let's go and ride on a camel
like Paul did,' said Betty. 'No!' said Emma. ' They're too dangerous.' But when they got near
the camels,they were lying down and Betty wasn't afraid. She climbed on the smallest one.
Emma took a photo of her. 'You can show the picture to Paul' she laughed.
