Singapore is an island city-state in Southeast Asia. It is a member country of the Association of
South East Asian Nations (ASEAN). The country's total area is 725,1 sq km. Like Vietnam and other
countries in Southeast Asia, Singapore's climate is tropical and sunny. Singapore's temperatures mostly
remain between 24oC and 32oC. Singapore has very high humidity. The Singapore Dollar is the official
unit of currency (SGD).
The population in 2018 was about 5,638,700. The national language is Chinese, Malay, Indian and
English. Singapore is a multi-ethnic nation with many festivals and New Year of many countries such as
Malaysia, India, China, Western countries. This is an opportunity for Singaporeans to express and
strengthen their multi-ethnic culture.

Tom: Hi. I don't think we've met. My name's Tom.
Jenny: Hi, Tom. Nice to meet you. My name is Juanita, but everybody calls me Jenny.
Tom: Nice to meet you, Jenny. So, where are you from?
Jenny: Well, originally I'm from Argentina, but we moved to the United States when I was about five years old. My
parents now live in Chile. That's where they first met. How about you, Tom?
Tom: I was born in Fresno, California, and we lived there until I was seven. Then, since my father worked for the
military, we moved all over the place.
