Many people worry about the effects of television on family life in the United States. In
the average home, the TV is on more than six hours a day. But do people always keep their
mind on the programs? And do people who watch TV really spend less time on other
freetime activities?
A study by some New York researchers found out that watching TV is the most popular
free-time activity in the United States. More than 70% of Americans say that they watch TV
every day, or almost every day. The second most popular activity is reading the newspaper.
Listening to music at home is third. Talking on the phone to friends and relatives is fourth.
Exercising or jogging is fifth.
Surprisingly, television does not seem to take time away from free-time activities at home.
Six out of ten people said that when the TV is on, they seldom pay attention to it. During a

typical television program, people may eat dinner, do housework, read a newspaper or
magazine, or talk or read to their children. The TV becomes 'background music'.
The researchers learned that in some ways Americans are very traditional. Teenagers and
single people may be interested in activities and excitement outside the home. However,
eight out of ten Americans like to spend their free time at home with family member and
friends.
(Adapted from "Reading Explorations")
Choose the best answer A, B, C, or D for each of the following questions.
31. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The bad effects of TV on American family life
B. The fact that Americans are very traditional
C. Americans' television viewing habits
D. How Americans spend their spare time
32. According to the research, which is the most popular leisure activity in America?

Hello, and welcome to “Fascinating Facts!” Today we're going to take a look at some those

toothpaste. So you think, hmmm, toothpaste – when was that invented? A hundred years ago?
Maybe two hundred? But we find that actually, toothpaste has been around for sixteen
hundred years. People from Egypt used it, and then the Ancient Greeks and Romans used it.
Was it the same as modern toothpaste? Definitely not. Ancient Greek toothpaste used
ingredients like crushed bones and oyster shells. OK, another invention for you: the good
old umbrella. If we look at a number of ancient sculptures from Egypt and Persia, which is
now called Iran, it's clear that the umbrella has been around for a long, long time, certainly
more than two thousand years, Interestingly, it seems that only kings or very important
people had umbrellas in these sculptures. So they were a symbol of high social class. But
what were they for? In Europe we tend to think of umbrellas as things to protect us from the
rain. But historically, they protected people from the sun. And later, they became a fashion
item. The next invention we are going to look at today is…..

John: Good morning, Steve. My name is John, and I am the new person in the Finance
Department.
Steve: Good morning, John. What can I do for you?
John: As a new person, I need to understand the operation at Lintel. So, I wonder whether I
can ask you some questions about the manufacturing process in your department now.
Steve: Hold on a second, John. Let me post this production schedule before we sit down and
talk.
Steve: OK, where do you want to start?
John: Well, you can describe the production flow in your department.
Steve: The production process is based on the customer-order information that I receive

from the Sales department. First, we order raw materials from our suppliers. Once the
materials arrive at our plant, they are transferred to the production floor where they will go
through five different processes before they become finished goods.
John: How many suppliers do we deal with? Are they all local suppliers? Do any materials
come from overseas?
Steve: We have a very limited number of suppliers. We deal with approximately ten main
suppliers in the US, and we only have a handful of suppliers overseas.
John: How do you control the quality of the purchased materials?
Steve: One of the reasons for having a limited number of suppliers is to ensure the quality of
raw materials. My Quality Control group works very closely with our suppliers to make sure
that they meet our quality requirements.
John: Do you maintain a high level of inventory?
Steve: No, we keep a very low level of inventory.
John: How do you move materials from one department to the next?
Steve: Very easily through the Material Request form. If department B needs materials from
department A, it will fill out a Material Request form and give it to department A.
John: A very simple process. How about labor? How do you calculate the labor cost?.

Suggested answer:
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to apply for the post of a volunteer teacher at New Star Foundation. I saw the
vacancy announcement on your organization's website.
I have some experience working with young children. Last summer, I spent three months
tutoring primary students at Birla Children's Village. I taught them English and organized
outdoor games for them. The children took part in these activities eagerly and their English
also improved significantly after that.

Tổng hợp: Download.vn

I am responsible, patient and have a great love for children. I can send you references from
my teachers and from the director of Birla Children's Village.
I would be available for an interview any day after school. If my application is successful, I
can start working at the beginning of June.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,

III. Reading:

Music influences people in different ways or the same person differently at different
times. Music may seem to influence people differently. That is because people can react
differently to the music. We are able to apply a choosing process to the music we hear. If
someone hates jazz, then a jazz piece with a positive effect will probably not make him feel
good. A happy song might appear to make an angry person angrier, yet it is not the music
itself that is creating the anger; rather it is the positive effect of the music. The angry person
does not want to accept the song's happy feeling: it points out his already existing anger, and
makes that anger come to the surface. When a piece of music is played and we are listening
to it, our body, mind, and feelings are being affected. The musicians of ancient cultures such
as China, India, Turkey and Greece understood the effects of music. In fact, Pathagoras, in
ancient Greece, introduced a whole science that concerned them. Because the musicians of

these ancient cultures understood these effects, they created music that was positive,
uplifting, and beneficial. Once the effects of music are better understood, the next step is to
gain a better understanding of the music around us, and what effect it is actually having.
