People used to donate their time to support and help their community. The Swiss Ministry of Health
created an assistance programme named “Time Bank”. Thanks to technology, Swiss citizens can save their time
and put it in banks to use later. People volunteer to look after the elderly who require help and assistance and
the information about the number of hours they spend caring for others is saved in their accounts. When the
volunteer reaches the age when he or she needs help and support, he or she can use the “Time Bank”. This time,
another young volunteer will come to look after them. A time bank is used to record the amount of time spent
providing the service. This service could include IT services, babysitting, hairdressing, gardening, nursing,
tutoring, or any other time-consuming job.
Other countries have begun to apply this system apart from Switzerland. The UK has adopted the “time

Do you skip breakfast? Millions of people do, and if you are one of them, you are harming your learning
and thinking ability. Skipping breakfast can cause you to be hungry, tired, or grumpy by the middle of the
morning. Why is that? First, when you wake up, you have not eaten for about eight hours. Your body's energy,
called glucose, is low. Eating breakfast raises the level of glucose in your brain. Your brain requires a constant
flow of glucose to do lots of work.
So eating breakfast will help you learn better at school. What if you don't have enough time for breakfast
or if you are not hungry when you wake up? Having something for breakfast is better than nothing. Drink some
milk or juice. Then catch a nutritious snack later on in the morning. Yoghurt, dry cereal, cheeses, or fruit are
good choices. What if you don't like breakfast foods? Then eat healthy foods you like. Even cold pizza or a
fruit smoothie can power your morning. Any way you look at it, there's no reason to skip this important meal.

Two years ago, my dad had a new job, so my family moved to this city. When I came to this school, I
didn't know anyone. I decided to join some sports clubs to meet new friends, but I did badly in all of them.
Then, one of my classmates invited me to go on a walk in the mountain with her family. I didn't say yes
immediately because it didn't sound very interesting. However, I decided to give it a try, and this was the
beginning of my love for hiking. At first, I walked slowly because I wasn't very fit. Then, I improved quickly
and now I can walk quite fast. I began to feel so much better. Now, I go hiking with my friends once or twice a

month and we really enjoy it. Hiking is a great way to get outside, move your body and explore new places.
Hiking makes my lungs, bones and muscles stronger. You don't need any special equipment to go hiking. All
you need is comfortable clothes and a good pair of sneakers so that you don't hurt your feet. Don't forget to
bring lots of water and some snacks, such as fruit, nuts or seeds to eat while hiking.

"STRANGE FOOD" TOUR IN VIETNAM
Harry's blog
I have been to Viet Nam in two months and I am so in love with this country. This time coming back to my
beloved place, I decided to challenge myself to try some unusual dishes. The experience was incredible!
Trứng vịt lộn (Duck in an egg/ Balut)
As described in the name “duck in an egg”, balut is the nearly formed baby duck in an egg. This weird and
unusual Vietnamese food is a nutritious and favourite street food. The image of trying to eat an egg with
“bones” and “feathers” could be horrifying to some people.
The egg is boiled for 5 to 7 minutes and served with Vietnamese herbs, some ginger, and salt mixed with
black pepper in lime juice. Sip on the juice then enjoy the taste of the egg with the salty, spicy and sour sauce,
you will never forget this strange experience. The herbs and ginger also enhance the flavour of this dish so I
recommend you must try it with balut. Amazing!
Bún đậu mắm tôm
The original version of this unusual Vietnamese food consists of rice vermicelli (bún), fried tofu (đậu), and
shrimp paste (mắm tôm). These simple ingredients make the dish one of the most popular Vietnamese dishes.
Until now, even many local people still find the fermented shrimp paste's smell unpleasant, while others
quickly get addicted to its flavour when eating it with tofu or vermicelli.
In many restaurants and stalls these days, they add some boiled pork belly, fried spring rolls and other
Vietnamese sausages. The various, colourful ingredients are put carefully on a bamboo plate. A food lover
would add some drops of kumquat, some chilli, and sugar to the shrimp paste and mix it all together. Take the
first bite with crunchy fried tofu dipped in the sauce, and add some bún and chả cốm after that. Don't forget to
eat some herbs. It's both fatty and fresh, salty and spicy, crunchy and soft. It feels like a big feast inside one
bite. I would say that bún đậu mắm tôm is worth a try!

Studies have shown volunteering can have lifelong benefits for youth and help develop skills that will
benefit them in life, school, and future career. First, volunteering can lead to a greater feeling of self-worth
because helping others can help teens reflect on what they have and become more empathetic to everyone in
their lives.
People who volunteer when they are young are more likely to volunteer and donate to non-profit and
charity funds when they are older. Moreover, volunteering can also help teens academically. There is a positive
link between students who earn good grades and those who are involved in community service. Finally,
voluntary work helps teens gain new skills which are necessary for the job market such as leadership,
communication skills, dependability, time management, and decision making.
36. Volunteering brings many benefits to young people ________.
A. in their study
B. in their study and life
C. in their study, job, and life
37. Helping other people develops a teenager's _________.
A. confidence and good values
B. sense of belonging
C. life circumstances
38. The word "empathetic" is closest in meaning to _________.
A. willing

39. Young volunteers tend to _______ when they are older.

A. be less generous
B. do voluntary work and give donations
C. work for non-profit organisations

PLASTIC CLOTHING
Lots of things can be recycled -such as glass, paper, metal, and plastic. Rethink Fabrics is a company based
in Seattle, U.S.A. It is trying to fight the planet's plastic waste problem one bottle at a time.
The company's goal is to encourage people to think about where their clothes come from by making
clothing from trash. It uses new technology to make clothing items for men and women, like T-shirts.
The T-shirts are made out of 100% recycled polyester (called rPET), from plastic bottles. Inside every Tshirt is a small picture showing how many bottles were recycled to make it, so customers know they are helping
the planet. The T-shirts are high-quality and not very expensive to buy.
At the end of the T-shirt's life, the recycling process continues--it is made into another new piece of
clothing. Other companies also recycle old clothes into footwear and even household items, like carpets.
Recycling your plastic really can help to save the environment!
